Tinnitus

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the annoying ringing, buzzing, clicking, or whistling sound you hear when everything around you is quiet. Only you can hear these sounds, but don’t worry, you’re not going crazy!
Tinnitus is caused by damage to the cells in your inner ear. This can be from hearing loss, exposure to dangerously loud noise, head or ear injury, or even a buildup of earwax. When the cells in your ear are damaged, they will sometimes send signals to the brain even though everything around you is quiet. Your brain interprets these signals as sound despite the absence of external sound.

Over 50 million Americans have tinnitus. Some experience tinnitus rarely, while others live with tinnitus as a constant source of irritation and discomfort. Tinnitus can cause stress, anxiety, moodiness, insomnia, and difficulty focusing on tasks.

Types of Tinnitus

There are two main types of tinnitus, subjective and objective. Subjective tinnitus is the most common form of tinnitus, and it’s caused by damage to the cells of the ear. This tinnitus can come and go, and you may experience it from time to time, or more constantly. Objective tinnitus is caused by damage, or deformity in the ear. This tinnitus can also be heard by your hearing specialist. Once the underlying cause it treated, objective tinnitus can disappear altogether.

Tinnitus Treatment

Sadly, there is no cure for tinnitus, and if you’ve started to experience this ringing or buzzing in your ears, you cannot completely rid yourself of tinnitus. There are several treatment options available for tinnitus, and it’s best to start with hearing aids.

Tinnitus and hearing loss often occur together, which is why many of today’s top hearing aids have built-in tinnitus management programs to give you relief from your tinnitus symptoms. Digital hearing aids that help you focus on the sounds you want to hear, while also reducing background noise, will help manage your tinnitus, and make it easier to hear the sounds you’re trying to hear.

The most common tinnitus treatment option is a sound therapy program. These programs in your hearing aids are calibrated to match your unique tinnitus, and when you activate the program your tinnitus will be masked by white noise, pink noise, nature sounds, or even your favorite music, causing your tinnitus to fade into the background and bring relief from tinnitus.

Other treatment options include:

Tinnitus can lead to increased stress, and the more stressed you feel the more tinnitus you’ll experience. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy will help you break the negative cycle of stress, and bring relief from your symptoms of tinnitus.

Types of Hearing Loss

There are three main types of hearing loss that affect your hearing in different ways.

This hearing loss is the most common form of hearing loss. It can be caused by presbycusis or the natural aging process, as well as by exposure to dangerously loud sounds. In both these cases, the cells in your inner ear are damaged, and your cells can’t detect sound waves, or transmit this information to your brain. With sensorineural hearing loss, you’re more likely to have trouble following speech, struggle with high pitched sounds, and have a hard time hearing in places with a lot of background noise.
